He is our Uncle Dean.
Enjoy Part Two!
L+C - Why did you want to own a business?
D - I have always wanted to own a business. It was something I wanted to do from a young age. Finance and how things work have always been an interest of mine. I worked in accounting for 3 years with my uncle and that's where I learned how small business ran. I eventually ended up in my dad's dry cleaners. When Cheri and Troy went to hair school, I thought this is what we are going to do.
L+C - What is your favorite thing about being a salon owner?
D - The staff. Continuing on with what my father taught us about being a small business owner. We look after people and allow them to grow. It's nice to be able to build a company that way, its fun. We are a force. I'm proud that we brought a professional career salon to the Fraser Valley, when everyone believes it should be in Vancouver. We wanted to present wellness but not in a clinical way. Our goal is to present our business in a way we are not expected to and thrive.
L+C - Your a quiet leader in this community, what does being a Cloverdale businessman for 30 years mean to you?
D - What I can bring to my staff. If my legacy is that we were known as great people to work for then it's all worth it. Its more important to me what people think.
L+C - Where do you see Michauds going when you all retire?
D - We are not retiring,
L+C - In 2013 you were nominated for the BIA Best in Business Award.
What does that mean to you?
D - I'm proud of it. I don't thrive on those honours. It's not why we do what we do. I think it is nice that people noticed and that tells me that we are on the right track.
L+C - In 3 words describe Michauds.
D - Passion. Security. Culture.
L+C - You are famous for your renos. Why so many changes and upgrades?
D - Because the industry demands it and we are never satisfied.
L+C - How important are your employees to the business' success?
D - They are the only importance.
L+C - Did you ever think 20 years was possible?
D - Yes, we always talked forever.
L+C - What do you look for in a potential employee?
D - Passion, there has to be a spark there and a willingness to learn through trying and failing.
L+C - What are some of your craziest Michauds memories?
D - We've had a few floods. But mostly, we laugh. We all laugh so hard in the back room. Our staff is crazy-fun. The practical jokes, the inside jokes and just daily things that go on here are hilarious.
L+C - In one word characterize Michauds.
D - Family.
After our meeting with Dean, we were inspired by a
statement he shared with us about our Michauds family.
We both felt it was important to share it with all of you.
"The company cannot protect itself. We have to protect the company. It has no ability to do anything, it is only as strong as the people that are running it. Protect the company - protect the family."
